Setting Expectations

This is the most important part of the match:  communication with your Aupair.

Put the following items into writing and hand that “Aupair Manual” to your Aupair.
Go over the manual within 4 days of her arrival.  Go over the manual again after a couple of weeks, to reinforce.  And even is third time is OK.

Each Aupair needs to have guidelines and rules for the children and boundaries for herself.  You need to teach her what is important to you concerning your home and your children.

Important components of Aupair Manual:
• Weekly Schedule
o Detailing play / games, indoor activities; outdoor activities.
  o Child care hours
• Rules for kids
• Child Related Chores for Aupair (light housekeeping only)
• Chores of the Common Areas of the House
• Car guidelines - rules for the use of your car
• Aupairs’ host family related calls
• Aupairs’ personal phone calls
• Your back-up babysitter

I agree Kelly. This section is a definite winner. I never even thought of getting a back-up babysitter. And I can see how important the phone rules are to my family. And I haven't even read everything yet. This helps me for sure.

I totally agree that the agreement between the host family and au pair needs to be clear and all parties understand the terms of engagement.
